There are many benefits to practicing meditation, not the least of which is a clean mind. The mind is connected to the body and it is only when the mind is in harmony with the body that a person can truly relax and find balance. Meditation can help a person find a sense of inner peace and calm. It can also help someone achieve a sense of healing and balance.
So how does one go about getting into a meditative state of mind? Is there anything specifically that a person should do or look for? What would meditation consist of? Meditation may involve any number of things such as deep breathing, visualizing, and even yoga. Here is a brief description of some of the different types of meditation that can be performed.

Deep Breathing. This meditation is one that is often associated with deep relaxation itself. This form of meditation involves focusing on the very center of the chest and allowing all thoughts to completely dissolve. The body remains still for a time, allowing the mind to come to a rest. This form of meditation is also sometimes known as focusing the mind. There are a variety of methods used for this type of meditation, but the most common involve just trying to concentrate on breathing deeply.
Visualization. Another technique used for meditation is called visualization. This is done by imagining a colorful object such as a flower or a star in one’s mind. It is suggested that one imagine a flower for a minute and then stay with that image for as long as possible but still allowing the mind to drift off to where the imagination takes them.
Guided Imagery. This method of meditation is similar to visualization in that it allows the mind to “flow” into the image. It is also very similar in that one imagines themselves doing something that they want to do, but they are not sure what it is. If one tries to describe it to another, they will get a few ideas, but they may not be the exact thing. In this case, it is suggested that they practice imagining it a few times before actually doing it.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation. This is a form of meditation that is done by concentrating on the muscles surrounding the eyes and breathing out and through those muscles. This helps to relax them while at the same time preventing them from opening.
Body Scanning. It is believed that this method of meditation helps to keep the mind focused on thoughts in the present rather than on past and future thoughts, which may cause a feeling of loss of focus and mental clarity.
Other options that may be tried are audio or video recordings of relaxing sounds and soothing, warm tones. One can also listen to music while sitting in meditation to allow oneself to be lulled into a state of calmness.
Once the various techniques are learned, it may be necessary to modify them to fit one’s needs. For example, some people may find that quiet meditation is not enough, while others may need to try deep breathing exercises that are designed to focus their attention on deeper levels of relaxation.

Practice may be somewhat different for each person. It is important to find a quiet place where the mind is able to focus. Of course, if one is having trouble finding a quiet place, then it may be more beneficial to use a sound machine. This is most useful when combined with deep breathing exercises.
The ability to control one’s mind may be the key to achieving self-control and stability. Meditation is a good way to achieve this, especially since it is often said that the mind is the only true reality. By practicing meditation regularly, a person may be able to maintain a sense of relaxation and even enhance his or her mental health.
